Privacy for Schools
A plain-language summary of how Fishbole handles student data.
We built Fishbole for classrooms, so we know that before a school adopts a tool, someone has to be confident it treats student data properly. This page answers the questions schools ask us most. It’s a summary — the full detail is in our Privacy Policy.
The short version
- Students only join through their school or teacher. There’s no independent student sign-up. The school stays in control.
- We don’t sell student data. Ever.
- We don’t serve advertising inside Fishbole.
- We don’t use student work to train AI. Fishbole has no AI writing tools by design — the point is authentic student thinking.
- Everything can be deleted. A one-click “delete account” removes a user’s account and all their content.
What we collect, and why
| What | Why |
|---|---|
| A student’s name and email | To create their account and let a teacher identify their work |
| The presentations they create (slides, recordings, notes) | This is the Service — it’s the work they’re doing |
| Basic usage and viewership data | So a teacher can see who watched a presentation, and so we can keep the Service reliable |
We collect the minimum needed for the educational task. Nothing is collected to profile students or to advertise to them.
Who controls consent
Because students access Fishbole through their school or teacher, the school stays responsible for any parental or guardian consent required in your jurisdiction. We support your consent process rather than going around it — we don’t collect information directly from a child outside the school-authorised flow.
Where the data goes
Student content stays within Fishbole and the people a student chooses to share with (normally their teacher). We use a small, named set of trusted providers to run the Service — for hosting, analytics, payments and the Google Slides connection — and they’re contractually required to protect the data. The full list is in our Privacy Policy.
We never sell data, and there’s no advertising inside the student experience.
Deleting data
- A student or teacher can delete an account and all its content at any time from settings.
- A school can ask us to delete student accounts and content by emailing privacy@fishbole.io.
- When content is deleted, it’s removed from the Service (some copies may sit in backups briefly before being overwritten).
Sharing is controlled
Every presentation has a privacy setting — draft (only the creator), private (only people with the link), or public. Students choose how their work is shared, and teach-backs can be kept private to the teacher.
